BRUNEI launched its first edition of the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB or Malay Islamic Monarchy) collection book yesterday, a publication aimed at inculcating and imparting Bruneian values based on the MIB way of life in the community as a whole, with specially focus on the youth.

The book is a collection of working papers and articles that have been published in Pelita Brunei since 1984 to 2009 and is a 93-page book comprising 36 articles written by well-known and knowledgeable writers and intellectuals who are experts in their fields.

Chairman of the MIB National Executive Council, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Dato Setia Hj Mohamed Taib said that the publication is important as the book will be “a treasured source of reference for strengthening the MIB philosophy itself.”

Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Rahman, who is also the Education Minister, added that the collection will be a strong platform for all who want to explore MIB in depth.”Its contents enable us to understand the MIB in different aspects like history, philosophy, language, literature, geography, economy, culture and international relations,” he said.He also expressed hope that the book will help avoid confusion that surrounds MIB as a whole. “It is our responsibility to ensure that MIB will remain strong as the backbone of a continuously harmonious andwell-being nation.”

Brunei’s National Vision 2035 stresses on the country’s plus points like its education, highly skilled and successful citizens, with loyalty to the monarch and country, confidence in Islamic values and social harmony. This is a big responsibility for a ministry in creating an excellent role model with the MIB concept, added the minister. “Alhamdulilah, curriculum and co-curriculum at all levels of schooling have been equipped with MIB subjects and courses,” he said, adding that this is a continuous move towards ensuring that MIB will continue to be the life pulse towards achieving the vision.

He also stressed the importance of collaborating with relevant bodies to ensure that all the efforts to disseminate information on MIB will reach all sections of the community. So far, a total of 2,100 copies of the book have been published. The Information Department will be distributing the book free in all educational institutions, government departments and ministries and among individuals.
The co-chairperson of the event, Information Department Director Dr Muhammad Hadi Md Melayong said, “The publication only represents a small fraction of our efforts, but with it, we are upholding His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah on performing our role and responsibility towards disseminating and instilling the nation’s philosophy among the people.”

He added: “By doing this, Brunei’s traditional heritage will continue to prosper and flourish in our beloved Brunei , especially amongst the young generation. Indirectly, this move will dispel the negativestatements that we hear regarding the philosophy.” “We hope that through the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21), teachers as well as students and pupils at all levels of educational institutions will make the book their source of reference in the MIB subject,” he said, emphasising that the philosophy that the nation has been practising is the source of its welfare and prosperity.

Among the contributors to the book include Religious Affairs Minister Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain Hj Serudin and State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abdul Aziz Juned. The launch of the collection book is part of the MIB National Executive Council activities in executing their role and responsibility in upholding the MIB philosophy.
