SEAMEO VOCTECH celebrated its 20th anniversary with a dinner and the launching of SEAMEO VOCTECH’s magazine with the title “20 years Journey … Moving Forward to Excellence in VTET in Southeast Asia”.
Officiating the launching of the magazine was the guest of honour, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yusof bin Haji Ismail, Deputy Minister of Education. The event was held at the Rizqun International Hotel yesterday.
In his speech, the deputy minister congratulated the management and staff of SEAMEO VOCTECH regional centre after 20 years of service specialising in vocational and technical education and training.
He also underscored the centre’s achievements for the last 20 years, which included the implementation of 521 training programmes involving over 16,000 participants.
“To date, SEAMEO VOCTECH has gone through three Five-Year Development Plans. In strategising the right plans, proper management systems, establishing a corporate culture and maintaining a sustainable and viable financial capability have charted SEAMEO VOCTECH’s direction through key performance indicators,which support the vision and mission in assisting VTECT systems of the SEAMEO Members Countries.”
The deputy minister emphasised that the centre must not rest as there are more challenges ahead. “New directions in this 21st century have to be integrated and implemented.
“SEAMEO VOCTECH should give a serious consideration in its own programmes to the National Education System for the 21st Century (SPN21) as well as other relevant topics on technology revolution and sustainable development,” he said.
The centre has lined up interesting events in conjunction with its 20th anniversary celebrations. According to the centre’s Acting Director, Awang Alias bin Haji Abu Bakar, today (Oct 7), a workshop for teachers on Enhancing Interactive Teaching Using Dbook will be held.
He added that a SEAMEO VOCTECH exhibition will also be held at the centre’s grounds and he invited students, especially from technical education institutions, to visit the centre and join in the fun activities.
During last night’s event, 11 staff who have achieved 15 years of service with the centre received an award as a token of appreciation. The awards were presented by the guest of honour.
Also present were Ambassador and Commissioner from SEAMEO member countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) and Associate Member Countries (Australia, Canada, France
and Germany), permanent secretaries, directors from the Ministry of Education and former chairman and directors of SEAMEO VOCTECH and staff.
