New Order to regulate engineering standards

PUJA Brunei (Pertubuhan Ukur Jurutera & Arkitek or the Architects, Surveyors &  Engineers Association) held their first ever Membership Drive last night at I-Lotus Restaurant.

With the aim of encouraging more people to join the association, which currently has 271 members, the event was attended by the President of PUJA (B), Dato Hj Idris bin Hj Abas.

To start the night off, Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, the Director General of the Public Works Department and Chairman of PUJA Brunei, spoke.”Since its inception in 1984, PUJA has served as a platform for professional interactions among members and the linkage with regional and international professional institutions,” he said.”When the approval of the Professional Order Act is approved soon by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, it will become mandatory for practising surveyors, engineers and architects to register and become members of PUJA,” he added.

The chairman said that the Order would give PUJA the authority to regulate, conduct or ethics of engineers, and to establish and maintain standards of professional conduct. He said it would also be to ensure that members demonstrate a high standard of professional development to meet the expectations of clients, employers and the public.

“Next year, PUJA Engineer Division will undertake the task of organising the 29th CAFEO (Conference of the Asean Federation of Engineering Organisation) to beheld in November 2011 in Bandar Seri Begawan when more than 500 professional engineers from Asean member countries and Asia Pacific Countries will attend,” he added.

“This is attainable with the full commitment of our organising committee members,  and contribution from all the engineering members in the division and from you, the new members to be.”A presentation then followed, in which attendees were briefed on what the  association does, and what exactly it means to be a member.
